I found it very informative and useful for when wandering the streets and, I admit, categorizing people… Here they go:

Thugs/Hooligans

Habitat: Football matches, dodgy boozers*, meat-market nightclubs**

Identification: Usually pot-bellied, sporting tattoos from prison, heavily sun-burnt if given the opportunity

Most likely to say: Something to be revered in a distinctly 80’s way, like day glo socks or a pair of Reebok Pumps. Hence I was rather shocked to learn of their fanatical support elsewhere, especially Eastern Europe. Dave Gahan, Depeche Mode’s lead singer, who could spend all day walking around his home town of Basildon without anyone batting an eyelid, is apparently somewhat of a God outside the UK. Legions of young followers, Depechists, follow Dave religiously – even, if you can believe it, marching on his birthday.

Apparently not every Brit is as ignorant of Depeche’s legendary status as I was. Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller and collaborator Nicholas Abrahams found it so interesting that they made a film about it. The Posters Came From the Walls is a fascinating insight into their fans. But it is more, much more, than just a fan flick. The film transcends Depeche Mode themselves and becomes a genuine insight into one of the most important generations of our time; the youth of the ’89 revolution. This youth embraced Depeche Mode’s music as the music of change - the soundtrack to the fall of the Berlin Wall. I doubt, sadly, Depeche themselves realise this.

The film starts with a focus on a pair of rather cringe-worthy pair of US teenagers, but soon develops into a really touching, and heart-warming, expose into the fans who consider Depeche Mode an integral part of their culture. When the film focuses on a group of thirty-something Germans, recounting their first experience of live western music (hence the title of the film) when the band played East Berlin in ’88, you start to realise the pivotal, if accidental role, they probably played in the revolution.

Photo: Michael Putland

The Posters Came From the Walls is easily one of the best films I’ve seen all year. When, at the end of the film, a homeless British man recounts how his only possessions for years were a Sony Walkman and a copy of 101, and how this, he believes, helped him to get back onto his feet, I genuinely felt moved to tears. Deller and Abrahams have far more than just created another music documentary; they have created an exquisite and engaging account of one of the most important cultural phenomena of our generation.

The Posters Came from the Walls isn't on general release, but the directors hope to get it distributed more widely soon. For more information see the documentary's official site.

How I Hate Conclusions...

Long time no blog!

Daniel and I tossed a £ about a month ago to decide who should break the silence. It was on him. A month later however, I am gracefully taking the initiative, and will kindly ask you to pretend he had already posted his “breaking the silence” entry. It will only put more pressure on him to actually write it and save me some time making up excuses. Good.

Now, I have been out of college since early summer and waiting to start work for the past couple of months (courtesy of the bad cops at the Border Agency, UK). Bumming around in London while most of my friends are enjoying their final year of college, or even better, planning for grad school, or, my favorite, writing clever papers in grad school (nod to Mia: send that minimalist thing along, mujer!!), has made me miss and reminisce about school. To the extent of buying myself a GRE book. Of course I bought the wrong book, the one without the actual preparation materials and just several practice tests.. That and the fact that I will actually have to work for a couple of years helped me come up with a creative method to fight my school-cravings.

It’s very simple really; remembering the aspects of college work which I didn’t like so much. And for me, there is one uncontested winner; having to write conclusions to my papers.

I hate writing conclusions with a passion. I hate it so much that I would rarely (dis)grace my college papers with conclusions. The surprising thing (and one that led me to appreciate how cool my profs were) is that professors never gave me a hard time about it (this talk is about humanities papers btw, I did abandon my principles for econ). Actually, the only time a prof remarked that the last paragraph of my paper was, errrm, not conclusive, it only took confessing I am an anti-conclusionist for him to admit that he got furious every time he had to write one. YES!!

Below are just a couple of improvised reasons why conclusions are a very dated concept

It’s disrespectful to the reader! It is, I swear. Most conclusions do little more than summarize the “main” points of an argument. I find this quite condescending to dear reader. They have already read your fantastically complex thoughts and don’t need to have everything conveniently chewed and spat out at the end. For one thing, it doesn’t encourage creativity...

it is inhumane to the writer. I know I can’t speak for writers, but for me writing papers was a painfully and exhilaratingly dramatic process. By the time I had assembled the jigsaw puzzle of the argument my mental powers had suffered a considerable blow.. You don’t get interesting conclusions like that…

So, what do you say? Are you a conclusionist or did I overkill it ;)

Putting things into perspective

I often find it surprising how quickly people forget the past. Not that long ago life was quite different. My postman, for instance, did not drive a BMW. Porsches were for rich, intelligent, and successful people – not estate agents. I can still remember how awestruck I was when, as a little boy, I saw my first Ferrari. Today conspicuous consumption, or at least the signs of past conspicuous consumption, is everywhere. Today’s little Daniels, I imagine, barely bat an eyelid when a Bentley passes by.

For most of my childhood I received pocket money of 50 pence a week. One shiny little coin. Several weeks of hard saving would pass by before little Daniel could even afford a matchbox car. My first job, as a paperboy, required getting up at 6am every day, even before school, to deliver newspapers for an hour. Had I not been volunteering it probably would have classified as slave labour. My only solace was the beer and cigarettes it would afford me at the end of the week. That said, I didn’t have much time to enjoy them, as I usually spent most of my weekend catching up on lost sleep.

a fruit of my hard saved pocket money

My somewhat exaggerated self-pity pales into insignificance compared to my fathers childhood. Born in the 1950’s, into a poor area of London, unbelievably he did not have electricity in his house until he was 11. Bath time for my father was a weekly event, situated outside in the garden, even in the middle of the winter, with bath water shared with the rest of the family. Quite unimaginable given they lived just a few miles from central London. Unsurprisingly, given their reliance on candles and gas lights, fires were a continual hazard and not before long their house burnt to the ground.

When you consider that, a mere 40 odd years ago, there were people living in developed cities like this, it helps to put things into perspective. Despite the continual doom in the media, life isn’t that bad. Yes people are losing their jobs, and yes I feel bad for them, but it isn’t the end of the world. Yet. Unemployment might be increasing rapidly, but don’t forget it is starting from a very low base. In the UK, for instance, it is still substantially less than when Labour came into power back in 1997.

UK unemployment rate, source: DataInsight

Ireland, much like the UK, has also been taking its fair share of criticism lately. According to the Telegraph – “the Celtic Tiger is dead, and its cubs are thinking of leaving”. Well, for all the troubles Ireland is in at the moment, it is still measurably better off than even a few years ago. As you can see below, Ireland’s real GDP has doubled in the last 10 years. I doubt even the most pessimistic Cassandra expects Ireland’s GDP to fall 50%. Even if it did, it’s not like Ireland 10 years ago was an uninhabitable wasteland full of starving children and mass unemployment.

Ireland Real GDP, source: DataInsight

So life goes on. We still have many innovations - the internet, mobile phones, and cheap flights to name just a few –that we take for granted and that barely even existed 10 years ago. I still have my friends, a loving family, and a wonderful girlfriend. The UK is not about to sink. Ireland is not dead. Friends who lose their jobs will find new ones. Bad companies will get acquired or replaced by good ones. Undeniably life for some people will be hard, but I don’t foresee people in London going back to bathing once a week and living without electricity.

London takes a day off

Yesterday I made the mistake of flippantly telling my mum we had more chance of Santa coming down the chimney next Christmas than serious snow falling in London. Well mum, I apologise - I'll start baking the cookies now. Today has seen the most snow fall in London for 20 years. And everything is shut, broken, or suffering from 'adverse weather conditions'. Not that I'm complaining - it would be pretty stupid to invest in precautions for a 1 in 20 year event.

Rather than worrying about getting to work, most people seemed to be out enjoying themselves. Me? Well after missing out on a couple of snowboarding seasons due to lack of money, I jumped at the chance to get my snowboard out.

New Job!!

Have been looking for a part time job for a while - not earning any money and living in London is the stuff that gives bank managers nightmares (especially mine...). Thankfully I've just found something that is right up my street. It is a startup in the location / recommendation / web space which fits really nicely with what Phil, Chris, and I were looking at last year with Puls8. I'm sure I'll be pitching in with all sorts (I've heard that tends to be the way with startups), but my main task will be internet marketing - primarily helping drive new traffic to the site. I'm really looking forward to starting, and hopefully I'll be able to apply some of the concepts from my internet marketing course to a real business. Anyway, I may as well start now, so if you are reading this please visit Qype :)

Artistic...

I admit I have not been nearly satisfactory in keeping my commitment to the blog.. Most of my writing in the past few weeks has been for college papers, and I am in the midst of finals, therefore not too keen on doing more writing for the blog.
I tried to come up with an acceptable compromise between avoiding more writing and making a blog post. I know, at first this seems an almost contradictory task. A possible solution was to post cool pictures, but it is now too cold to go out and actually take photos. Still, my admirable ingenuity (!) (yes, thank you) paired with the Drawing I class I took this semester, aided me out of this rather difficult situation.
Thus, this week’s post consists of a few of my art attempts this semester:

The first couple are sketches of nude models we did in class. I know my anatomy is a bit more creative than required, which certainly shows in my naked man. His thigh is somewhat delicate to support his nicely-rounded belly. But what are a few inches here and there anyway?

The third drawing is me attempting to portray myself as a drama-queen. I end up with a crooked mouth and looking a bit like a cartoon woman.

Not to give the wrong impression though, I am quite affectionate towards my drawings. Taking a drawing class my final year was a spontaneous decision accompanied by a smirk from a professor in a more “serious” discipline. Now, I see scribbling and getting covered in charcoal as a cool balance tool, so very glad i did it :)

Technologic

What product have you used lately that is truly innovative? Hmm, tough question. I was asked this recently in a job interview and it had me pretty stumped. I mean an iPod is pretty cool, but its more innovative marketing than innovative design. Similarly I like my macbook, but at the end of the day its just a laptop. After a brief awkward silence I had my answer; last.fm and pandora.com. These two websites have changed the way I experience new music. Gone are the days of trawling the internet and magazines for new bands and artists. Now all I need to do is sit back and listen. For free! Both sites will recommend and play music for you based on your existing tastes. For instance if you like Gotan Project, then last.fm will recommend you try listening to Zero 7 or Theivery Corporation. More than just recommending the music, the site will play them back to you as a constant audio stream.

A huge community has sprung up around last.fm, and the site today has a wealth of information about artists and music. Pressure from both the environmental lobby and, I'm guessing, the bank manager, has definitely dampened the usual exuberant waste of money and electricity that are central London's Christmas decorations. Thankfully this pressure seems to have sparked some creativity, and the decorations this year look a lot better for it. Gone are the over coloured, over powered, and under designed affairs of previous years. Regent Street, as usual, boasts the most elaborate decorations, which are supposedly giant stars - although i'll let you decide what they actually resemble!

Covent Garden has opted for a rather more creative installation. The dazzling chandeliers hanging from the ceiling are interactive and respond to passers-by. The team behind the lights, UVA, have previously worked on light shows for Massive Attack and Basement Jaxx, so they definitely get my support :)

Massive Attack and UVA aside, my vote this year goes to Carnaby Street. With a bit of flair, no extra lighting, and several inflatable snowmen they have managed to create a really captivating effect without the usual cost and electricity implications.

Whilst we are on the subject of Christmas, my New Technology Venture class managed to get in some early festive celebrations this week. And if the past month is anything to go by, you could be forgiven for believing them. But one of the aims (or rather instructions from my dear blogging partner) of this blog is to give an insight into what it's like living in London, so I’ll let you into a secret. It actually doesn’t rain that much here. In fact, with its average rainfall of 29 inches a year, London has less rain than New York (47”), Chicago (34”), South Hadley (42”), and even Dallas (37”). Sofia has it beat, with 22 inches, but what’s 7 inches between friends :) ?

Another well perpetuated myth is that London and the UK in general are densely populated, over-developed, and covered in tarmac. One reason for this misunderstanding is people’s reticence to venture further than the M25, or if you are a student from LBS, further than Baker Street tube station. In fact only 10% of the UK is urbanized. Yes, 90% of the UK is countryside. In many areas this countryside, starts well before the M25. This isn’t even taking into account the 1700 parks and open spaces in London itself. Indeed. London was recently voted one of the greenest cities in the world, beating San Francisco, New York, and amazingly Barcelona.

In case I still haven’t convinced you, here is a picture of a forest where I like to go mountain biking. It's less than an hour's cycle from central London, and well within the M25…

Post title; Raining Again by Moby (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=b1CDCOPD7uQ)

Turning Marxian

As someone who would like to believe that I had at least a partial role in the exhilarating protests of ’89 (my part consisting mainly in having been born; well, and looking cute on my dad’s shoulders), I was the last person to think I could ever feel some attraction for Marx’s ideas. In fact I remember being openly, hmmm disrespectful on several occasions when, upon mentioning that I am studying economics, my granddad suggested I should take a look at the Capital.

Now, after spending a large chunk of this semester learning about the history of economic theories with one of the coolest professors I’ve had, I notice a radical shift in my attitudes.

So, since for the past couple of weeks I’ve been pouring most of my words in a paper on the theory of Mr. Marx, I decided to kill two birds with one stone and blog it out.

To Marx now. It is incredible that despite that Marx is one of the best-known economists, his theory remains largely misunderstood and superficially examined. I have read enough articles claiming to address his theory and containing more references to The Communist Manifesto than Capital. And while public misunderstanding is to be expected due to the connotations of Marxism, the bias in academia surprised me.

But, to the point: Why do I think Marx is cool?

His theory of profits is the nucleus of his theory of capitalism (yes, his theory in fact was about capitalism, not communism) Profit is a question that classical economics never answered and neoclassical has never asked! And since capitalism is all about profit, somebody needs to explain it, right?

Marx’s theory of profits in a nutshell: profit is generated through the exploitation of workers, i.e. by their unpaid labor.

From this theory of profit follow other conclusions, which have been historically proved correct:

conflicts between employers and workers over the length of the work day, salaries, labor intensity, you name it..

And the most impressive prediction of all, technological progress is inherent to capitalism! The argument basically goes like this: within regulated length of the work day, the only way for capitalists to generate more surplus labor, i.e. increase profits, is to reduce the need for labor. Hence, the need for higher efficiency which comes through technology!

In comparison, all other economic theories don’t explain technology, but take it as constant (obviously not true) or assume it came from outer space (well, they put it as exogenous, same thing..) And this is a pretty grave shortcoming, considering technological change is one of the most significant phenomena which we have been observing.

Pfu, enough theory! My point is, Marxian theory explains a lot more than it is given credit for. And despite its problems, it is certainly a good idea to look more into it instead of discard it as something expired…

P.S. I am trying to convince Daniel to start a Marxian, well heterodox really, club in LBS; he’s pretending to not take my remarks seriously; I think he’s worried they’ll kick him out ;)

Couleurs

Subversive, criminal, creative, artistic, beautiful, expressive, dirty, anti-establishment.... No, I'm not describing Britney's new look. Neither am I describing my collection of boxer shorts. Nor Diana's sense of humour. What I'm referring to is graffiti. In a city like London, which lives in an almost perpetual state of drab grey, this work often brightens up an otherwise uninteresting wall or building. What else could turn a row of recycling bins into an art installation, or a derelict shop into a form of expression?

Recycling bins by Old Street roundabout

Derelict shop, Rivington St, opposite Cargo

p.s. however interested you are in graffiti I suggest, unlike Diana, you do not include it under the additional interests section of your CV / resume :)

As mentioned before I'm using song titles for my blog posts, this refers to Couleurs by M83 http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=wrv0F-WTio4 - Have tickets to see them in December, I can't wait!

Someone Great

I’ve found myself spending a lot of time counting days lately. Last year, with its excruciatingly boring accounting class and painfully pointless ethics class (everyone knows that your average MBA would swap their nan for a few pints and an internship at Goldmans…), daydreaming became my second most popular activity next to drinking free beer at Sundowners. This year I’m doing it even more. Except this year I don’t have an excuse. Despite being taught entrepreneurship by an internet millionaire and innovation by one of the most interesting professors I’ve ever had, I’m still struggling to concentrate. One side effect of always having something to look forward to is that I feel like I am killing time until that moment. Still, its only 18 days Diana ☺

What’s that carrot?

On a more somber note, whilst we are on the subject of counting things I thought it would be worth mentioning Remembrance Sunday, which commemorates soldiers who have died in service. In the UK and Canada, as well as a few other Commonwealth countries, people wear poppies to signify this event. The tradition of wearing poppies originates from battlefields such as the Somme in Northern France, where after the war they grew in their millions in an around the trenches. At the Somme alone, in one day nearly sixty thousand people were injured or killed – which is truly a number that I don’t want to count.

Bam!

According to Daniel, it is our 3-month anniversary today. He has spent quite a bit of time counting days, so I think I'll trust him on this one.

To commemorate this grandiose occasion, we decided to give the blogging thing a try. Largely because I personally have been tempted for a while, but didn't really get myself organized in India.. Then I mentioned it to gospodin Daniel, who gets easily excited about new ventures (He is supposedly coming up with a kids' book for me for Christmas; no escape now that it is made public!) So he set up the blog and I even shrewed him into writing the first post.. I think he is probably composing it now in a kitchen somewhere on the outskirts of London. I guess this would mean that I'm sort of shrewing him on a next level now that I have presumptuously stolen the first post ;) What can I say, I am getting better every day..

Anyways, we don't really have a central theme to our blog (yet), but we are starting off enthusiastic and will see where it takes us.. Please stop by and check on us! :)

Happy Anniversary, Dan!
